Obverse

The 1 Kilo Royal Canadian Mint Gold Bar has a simple but utilitarian design on its front, or obverse. The first bit of engraving is the mint’s logo, which is a circular seal that includes the name of the mint in both English and French.

In the middle of the bar, there are two etched boxes. The first reads “1 Kilo” and “999.9” in rows, and this box is flanked by two engraved maple leaves. The second box says, “Fine Gold,” then has “Pure Or” underneath - once again, marks in English and French, as required by Canadian law.

Finally, a slightly more ornate box is engraved at the bottom. Inside the box is the bar’s serial number.

Reverse

The reverse, or back, of the 1-kilo RCM bar is blank, a common choice for 1-kilogram gold bars. However, the lack of design does allow you to notice idiosyncrasies in the bar’s production process.

Cast gold bars, which are made by pouring molten gold into molds, always cool with a slightly different pattern than the next. In a sense, you can see the bar’s “fingerprint” on the reverse.

Pricing and Premiums

In terms of how this bar compares with the prices for other kilo gold bars, it is on the higher end of things. However, for all kilo bars, we’re more or less splitting hairs.

Although differences can be hundreds of dollars, the reality is that all 1-kilo gold bars, according to current price levels, are unavailable for anything less than $80,000 apiece. So, a few hundred dollars one way or the other are not going to make much of a difference for those in the market for a kilo of gold.

Where to Buy

The 1 Kilo Royal Canadian Mint Gold Bar is a high-quality bar from one of the most popular mints in the world. Thus, it is widely available through most dealers of note. However, your choice of dealer matters, so here are some of the best in the business:

  • JMBullion.com: A trusted dealer with nearly 400,000 positive customer reviews.
  • ProvidentMetals.com: Renowned for its stellar 4.9-star Google rating and excellent service.

Comparison

The following gold bars are comparable to the 1 Kilo RCM bar in quality and pricing:

  • 1 Kilo Argor Heraeus Gold Bar (New w/Assay)
  • 1 Kilo PAMP Suisse Gold Bar (New, Cast w/Assay)
  • 1 Kilo Perth Mint Gold Bar (New)

Investor Considerations

Like most 1-kilogram gold bars, the 1 Kilo RCM gold bar is usually reserved for investors with a large amount of money to commit to their stacks. It is difficult for most people to set aside tens of thousands of dollars for any reason, much less for buying precious metal.

However, this bar would appeal to investors who can afford it for a couple of reasons. For one thing, its provenance speaks for itself. The RCM is a trusted and well-known entity, particularly for investors who live in the United States. So, if you want to keep your gold North American, this bar might be the right thing for you.

The other reason to buy the 1 Kilo Royal Canadian Mint Gold Bar is that buying a gold bar is, in a way, economical. The per-unit cost of buying a kilo of gold is almost always less than the cost of buying smaller products, much less gold coins.

Royal Canadian Mint Details

The Royal Canadian Mint is the sovereign mint serving the people of Canada. In addition to the gold bar mentioned above, it mints all of Canada’s coin currency and several other bullion products.

The RCM has been operating out of its Ottawa location since 1908. It opened a second location in Winnipeg in the mid-1970s. For precious metals collectors, the mint rose to fame for its Silver Maple Leaf coin, which was and is minted at a then-unheard-of .9999 purity.
