Obverse

The obverse, or front, of the bar is simple and effective. The Johnson Matthey name and “USA” are engraved in an oval loop, with the bar’s purity (.9999) in the center. Below the oval, the words “Fine Gold” are inscribed, and the weight of the bar (10 ounces) is noted at the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse of the bar is left blank, highlighting the unique patterns created by the casting process. These patterns are a natural result of molten gold cooling in the mold, making each bar unique to some extent.

A Note About Johnson Matthey

While these bars bear the Johnson Matthey name, they are not produced by the original company. Johnson Matthey sold its refining operations to Asahi Refining in 2015. Asahi has since retained the Johnson Matthey branding for these bars. While the bars are of excellent quality, they are closer to reproductions than originals. Secondary market Johnson Matthey bars often carry higher premiums due to their rarity.

10 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bar (New) Pricing and Premiums

The 10 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bar is one of the least expensive 10 oz bars from a named refinery. Bars from unnamed mints or in varied condition are the only options that might be cheaper. That said, the price difference between most 10 oz gold bars is less than $1,000. Given the overall cost of these bars, such a difference is negligible.

Investor Considerations and Appeal

The 10 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bar appeals primarily to experienced investors. Its base price may exclude many prospective buyers, but for those with the means, it offers significant value. The bar’s high purity and the historical significance of the Johnson Matthey brand make it a strong addition to any portfolio.

Interestingly, these bars also attract investors drawn to the “Made in the USA” appeal. Although the brand is now owned by Asahi Refining, these bars are produced in Utah, making them an American product with a global reputation.

Regardless of investor motivations, the 10 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bar allows buyers to efficiently increase their gold holdings at one of the highest levels of purity available.
