What Is Tether Gold (XAUT)?
Tether Gold (XAUT) is the sister token to Tether (USDT). Both are stablecoins, meaning they are designed to track the value of a real-world asset. Tether (USDT) tracks the US dollar, while Tether Gold (XAUT) represents ownership of physical gold.
Each XAUT token represents ownership of one troy ounce of gold. That ounce is part of a specific physical bar that Tether stores in Swiss vaults. Each bar meets the London Bullion Market Association’s Good Delivery standard, one of the world’s best-known and most respected frameworks for certifying and authenticating gold and silver. A blockchain token backed by physical gold in this way is known as tokenized gold.
Because XAUT is tied to a physical amount of gold rather than a dollar value, its price moves with the global gold market and the spot gold price. Depending on liquidity and demand, the token can trade slightly above or below spot during the day.
XAUT tokens can be divided down to six decimal places. They trade around the clock, and holders can look up the serial number, purity, and weight of the specific gold bar linked to their wallet address.
Redeeming XAUT for physical gold is possible, but not practical for most holders. Tether only delivers to addresses in Switzerland, and the minimum redemption is 430 XAUT, roughly one full Good Delivery bar. Redemption also carries a 0.25% fee plus shipping costs. That puts physical delivery out of reach for most investors, so most smaller holders sell their XAUT on an exchange instead.
US residents cannot buy Tether Gold directly from Tether. However, XAUT is available on some cryptocurrency exchanges that serve US customers.
If you are deciding between XAUT and physical gold, it comes down to which tradeoffs matter most to you. XAUT has no storage fees and no shipping costs. Physical gold held in your own possession carries no counterparty or issuer risk, and it is something you can actually hold. Each investor has to weigh what matters most to them.
