1 ounce Britannia Gold Coins available from multiple dealers.

The British Gold Britannia is a gold bullion coin issued by The Royal Mint in 1987. The coin is the official gold bullion coin of Britain and features the female personification of Britain. The Britannia symbol goes back thousands of years in the British Isles and may have been the perfect choice for The Royal Mint when it decided to begin minting the Brittania series in the late 1980s.

The British Gold Britannia was first minted during an interesting time for global bullion markets. The gold bull market of the 1970s pushed several mints to try to counter the popularity of the South African Krugerrand as an increasing number of investors looked to invest in gold bullion. The coin’s imagery vastly predates the minting of the Brittania coin series. The term Brittania dates all the way back to the dawn of the first millennium AD. Britannia was used as a term for the province once it fell under Roman control. Emperor Hadrian used the Brittania symbol on a coin around the year 119.

The use of Brittania on British coinage was revived in 1672 by King Charles II. The symbol was increasingly used following the unification of the crowns of England and Scotland in the early 18th century. The debut of the Gold Britannia series in 1987 featured the image again in a way that is not seen on any other British coinage.

When the Gold Britannia was first issued in 1987, it was struck with 22-carat gold, also known as “crown” gold. The coin had a purity of .9167, with copper bedding added to the mix as well. In 2013, the Royal Mint upgraded the coin to a purity of .9999. All Brittania coins carry a face value based on the Pound Sterling, the official currency of Great Britain.

British Britannia Gold Coin Values

The gold brittania coin is a gold bullion coin. It derives almost all of its value, therefore, from its gold content. Just because these coins are not officially collectible does not mean that they cannot have any extra premium. Older Britannia coins, for example, may have values that exceed more recent mintage years. Britannia coins minted in newsworthy years may also have some extra premium attached to them. Despite these subtle differences, however, the majority of Britannia coins will be very closely valued based on their gold content. Because the coin has been minted in two different purities, that may also affect any difference in value.

Unique Qualities Of Gold Britannia Coins

The age of the design of the Brittania coin is certainly a unique feature. In addition to its imagery, the gold Britannia series also now features new security features that allow buyers to inspect the coin physically to verify its legitimacy. The new security features, introduced in 2020, make the gold Britannia coin the most visually secure gold bullion coin in the world. These features include a latent image, surface animation, micro-text, and tincture lines.
